Most brides and grooms know that photos are one of the important parts of a wedding day. Wedding photographs are a cherished family heirloom and the images are held onto for generations to come. Great wedding photography tells a story of your wedding day, the little details, the moments and the emotions as they unfold. As a documentary wedding photographer, I feel a profound sense of responsibility capturing the essence of your wedding day. Key for me is maintaining an unobtrusive presence while capturing a unique collection of photographs that are personal to you.
The best thing you can do in order to get your must have wedding photos is to put your trust in a professional wedding photographer. However, it’s nice to have a general idea of what to expect and the must have moments you want captured.

The Bridesmaids
This is always a fun shot to have of your day and a nice memory of the girls together. It’s a relaxed image of the people closest to you, being natural and laughing together.
Couple Portraits
This is my favourite part of the wedding day. I keep it super relaxed and fun and aim to capture some lovely moments of the two of you together.
Bridal Portrait
Time for the bride to shine. I usually place the bride in some flattering light and give her some time to catch her breath and contemplate the day ahead.

The Groom
Time for the groom to step up! A cool shot of the groom and the boys getting ready is one worth considering. I offer couples a second photographer for this very reason. It’s always great to get both sides of the bridal party ‘getting ready’ and a lovely opportunity to see what your partner was doing in the morning.
The Wedding Dress
Capturing the dress in all it’s glory…before you’re in it.
Getting Ready Moments
In the morning I will always pick my spot for the best light and composition and and sit back and capture the chaotic organisation that is a bridal suite. Without fail their is always lovely moments.
Walking down the Aisle
No matter who is giving you away this is always a fabulous shot and one you will cherish. I try to capture the groom looking tentatively over his shoulder where possible
The First Kiss
Sealed with a loving kiss. I ask my brides and grooms to speak to their officiant and politely ask for them to step out of view for this moment. In most cases they are more than happy to and I can get the epic first smackeroo.

PHOTOS YOU MUST HAVE FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY
The Confetti Throw
A natural and lovely moment to capture, and one guests enjoy as much as the bride and groom. I have a few tips to make sure this moment is captured perfectly, including hiding from your guests until they’ve formed a confetti tunnel.
Candids
I’m a documentary photographer so most of my portfolio is about capturing candid photos of as many guests as I can, usually when they’re not aware I’m even there.
The Details
After you’ve spent so much time planning the finer details of the day it would be a great shame not to capture the details before the guests enter the room.
Family Portraits
I always make a little time during the day to capture a few family portraits, usually limiting the number to 10. Although I’m primarily documentary in style I recognise that having a shot for the mantlepiece is important and it’s rare that the wider family gather together.
The Speeches
Key here is to get a good position without spoiling the view for guests. These moments are more about the reaction than the action!
Cutting of the Cake
I like to capture this shot with the guests included, so many cake photographs are tucked away in a corner or against a boring wall. Get your venue manager to put the cake in the middle and let the moment shine.
First Dance
A big moment for the bride and groom and guests. This is another moment that is best captured with guests in the background and not the DJ (sorry DJ’s), but I want to see the smiling faces of guests as the bride and groom awkwardly shuffle.
Party Time
Finally, you can let your hair down and we can get some epic images as guests celebrate with you, parting to the wee small hours.
