An Intimate Wedding at Chiltern Open Air Museum

A Wonderfully Personal Wedding at Chiltern Open Air Museum

There is something incredibly special about intimate weddings.

Without the pace and pressure of a larger celebration, couples are often able to truly slow down and experience every moment — the nerves before the ceremony, the laughter with family and those quiet moments together that can sometimes pass by too quickly.

Faye and Matt’s intimate wedding at Chiltern Open Air Museum was exactly that. A deeply personal celebration shared with just seven guests, centred around love, family and meaningful moments rather than formality.

Held inside the wonderfully characterful Henton Chapel, affectionately known as the “Tin Tabernacle”, their day felt relaxed, emotional and wonderfully authentic from beginning to end.

As a Chiltern Open Air Museum wedding photographer, these smaller celebrations are often some of my favourites to photograph. There is an intimacy to them that allows real moments to naturally unfold, creating photographs that feel honest, emotional and timeless.

WHY CHILTERN OPEN AIR MUSEUM IS SUCH A
UNIQUE WEDDING VENUE

Tucked away in the Buckinghamshire countryside, Chiltern Open Air Museum is unlike almost any other wedding venue.

Rather than a traditional manor house or barn, the museum is made up of carefully preserved historic buildings set amongst beautiful open grounds, woodland and meadows. It offers couples something genuinely different, somewhere full of character, charm and quiet beauty.

For intimate weddings in particular, it works brilliantly.

The venue feels wonderfully relaxed, with plenty of space to enjoy the surroundings without ever feeling overwhelming. Every corner offers something visually interesting, from historic buildings and pathways to peaceful countryside backdrops.

And then there is Henton Chapel.

Known affectionately as the Tin Tabernacle, this beautiful little chapel has a warmth and intimacy that suits smaller ceremonies perfectly. It feels deeply personal, almost as though it was designed specifically for meaningful, close-knit weddings like Faye and Matt’s.

A Beautiful Ceremony Inside the Tin Tabernacle

Faye and Matt chose to keep things intentionally small, inviting only seven guests to share in their day.

And honestly, it suited the setting perfectly.

Inside Henton Chapel, the atmosphere felt wonderfully personal from the very beginning. With such a small gathering, every smile, every glance and every laugh carried even more meaning.

There was no sense of performance or pressure, simply two people making promises to one another surrounded by the people who mattered most.

The charm of the chapel itself adds so much to the experience. Its historic character, soft light and intimate scale create a wonderfully warm setting for photographs while still feeling understated and authentic.

As a documentary wedding photographer, my focus is always on allowing moments to unfold naturally. The best photographs often happen in the spaces between, a proud smile from a parent, a quiet moment of reassurance before vows or the laughter that follows when emotions spill over.

Small weddings like this allow those moments to breathe.

A Relaxed Picnic in the Grounds

One of the things I loved most about Faye and Matt’s day was what happened after the ceremony.

Rather than moving into a formal reception, the couple embraced the relaxed atmosphere of the museum and enjoyed a picnic together in the grounds outside.

It felt wonderfully fitting for the venue.

The open green spaces at Chiltern Open Air Museum lend themselves beautifully to slower, more informal celebrations. Guests were able to chat, relax and simply enjoy the moment together without a rigid schedule or timeline.

Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the most memorable.

For couples considering an intimate wedding here, I genuinely think this is one of the venue’s hidden strengths, the ability to create a day that feels entirely your own.

Whether that is a picnic, drinks outdoors or simply spending more time together as a family, the museum gives you the freedom to make the day personal.

Family Photographs Without Taking Over the Day

After the ceremony and picnic, we spent a little time capturing relaxed family photographs.

With only seven guests, group photographs felt easy and natural rather than rushed or overly structured.

One of the advantages of intimate weddings is that formal photographs rarely dominate the schedule. You can quickly capture the important family moments and still have plenty of time to simply enjoy the day.

My approach is always to keep group photographs relaxed and efficient, helping things feel natural while still making sure everyone looks their best.

This meant Faye and Matt could quickly get back to spending time with the people they love.

A Gentle Stroll for Newlywed Portraits

After family photographs, we took a relaxed wander around the grounds to capture some newlywed portraits.

This is often my favourite part of the day.

Rather than creating heavily posed images, I prefer to gently guide couples while allowing plenty of space for natural interaction. A simple walk together, a quiet conversation or a shared laugh often creates photographs that feel far more meaningful than anything overly staged.

Chiltern Open Air Museum is ideal for this style of photography.

There is so much variety in a relatively small area , historic buildings, pathways, open spaces and softer countryside backdrops that never feel forced or overly manicured.

For Faye and Matt, the stroll gave them a chance to pause and take everything in.

No audience, no pressure – simply a few quiet moments together as newlyweds.

Those moments are often the ones couples tell me later they valued most.

Tips for Couples Planning an Intimate Wedding at Chiltern Open Air Museum

If you are considering Chiltern Open Air Museum for your wedding, particularly a smaller celebration, here are a few things worth considering:

Allow Time to Explore the Grounds

Even for intimate weddings, I would recommend allowing 20–30 minutes for portraits. The venue offers so much natural variety without needing lots of walking or time away from guests.

Embrace the Relaxed Atmosphere

The museum naturally suits weddings that feel personal and informal. A picnic, drinks outdoors or a relaxed gathering works beautifully here.

Keep Group Photos Simple

For smaller weddings, you can comfortably capture all the important family photographs in a short amount of time without disrupting the flow of the day.
