Set amidst the rolling hills just outside Bath, Priston Mill is a truly magical setting for couples dreaming of a rustic yet elegant wedding day. With its rich history, characterful stone buildings, and idyllic surroundings, this venue offers a perfect blend of old-world charm and contemporary comfort.

As a documentary wedding photographer, I love returning to Priston Mill time and again. Every wedding here feels unique, and there are countless opportunities to capture beautiful, relaxed images that reflect your personalities and the spirit of the day. Whether you’re drawn to the atmospheric Tythe Barn or the serene Watermill, Priston Mill is a canvas for stories waiting to be told.

An incredible experience and beautiful memories to cherish

A Venue Steeped in History

Priston Mill has roots stretching back over a thousand years. Originally owned by the monks of Bath Abbey, this ancient site has evolved over the centuries, yet retains a timeless quality that feels almost cinematic.

Today, it’s home to two distinct venues: the Tythe Barn and the Watermill. Each offers something different, but both are steeped in character. The Tythe Barn is especially popular for its soaring beams, rustic stone walls, and warm, welcoming atmosphere. It’s a space that feels grand and intimate all at once—a rare combination that photographs beautifully.

Just a short walk away, the Watermill is set beside a peaceful mill pond. This charming building offers a lighter, more contemporary feel while still retaining plenty of period features. The gardens here are particularly lovely for portraits and summer drinks receptions.

Tip: When booking Priston Mill, think about which building best reflects your style as a couple. The Tythe Barn is perfect for those who want a classic, countryside celebration with a dramatic backdrop, while the Watermill suits couples after a more relaxed, modern feel.

HINTS & TIPS FOR YOUR PRISTON MILL WEDDING

Getting Ready at Priston Mill

One of the best things about Priston Mill is that it feels wonderfully private. Tucked away down winding country lanes, it’s the kind of venue where you can truly switch off from the outside world and soak up every moment.

While there isn’t on-site accommodation in the barns themselves, there are plenty of charming cottages and boutique hotels nearby where you and your wedding party can get ready. Many couples choose to stay in Bath the night before, enjoying a touch of city luxury before retreating to the tranquillity of Priston Mill on the morning of the wedding.

If you’re planning a later ceremony, this can also be a lovely opportunity to schedule some relaxed pre-wedding portraits in Bath’s Georgian streets or along the River Avon—photos that add an extra chapter to your story.

Ceremonies with character

The Tythe Barn is licensed for civil ceremonies and offers a truly spectacular setting for your vows. Sunlight streams in through tall arched windows, illuminating the ancient stonework and casting a warm glow across your guests. From a photographer’s perspective, this light is a dream—soft and flattering without the need for intrusive lighting setups.

For more intimate weddings, the Watermill’s bright, airy interior is perfect. Here, ceremonies feel fresh and uplifting, with views across the mill pond and gardens.

Tip: If you’re marrying in winter, the Tythe Barn’s flickering candlelight and twinkling fairy lights create a wonderfully romantic atmosphere. Consider timing your ceremony to coincide with dusk for an extra touch of magic.

Receptions full of warmth

After your ceremony, guests can gather in the gardens or the bar area for drinks and canapés while we slip away for some relaxed portraits. Priston Mill’s surroundings are some of my favourites for photography—think sweeping fields, mature trees, and charming courtyards that work in every season.

Wedding breakfasts are held in the main dining spaces, where exposed beams, stone walls, and contemporary touches blend seamlessly. The Tythe Barn can seat up to 150 guests comfortably, making it ideal for larger celebrations. The Watermill suits smaller gatherings of up to 90, offering a more intimate, laid-back feel.

Tip: In summer, make the most of the long evenings by planning some outdoor games or a fire pit to encourage guests to mingle in the fresh air. As the sun sets, the golden light over the fields is perfect for a short stroll and a few more natural portraits.

Incredible Backdrops for Photography

Every corner of Priston Mill is a joy to photograph. The Tythe Barn’s vaulted ceilings and ancient stone lend a dramatic elegance to your images, while the Watermill offers a softer, lighter look.

The gardens and fields provide plenty of variety for your couple portraits, whether you prefer wide, cinematic landscapes or tucked-away nooks that feel more intimate.

One of my favourite spots is the little bridge beside the Watermill—it’s a romantic setting, especially in the early evening when the light shimmers across the pond.

Hints and Tips for a Priston Mill Wedding

  • Confetti Moment: The courtyard outside the Tythe Barn makes a perfect spot for a confetti throw. Biodegradable petals look stunning against the stone backdrop.
  • Golden Hour: The fields behind the venue catch the light beautifully at sunset. Build in 10–15 minutes to step away together for relaxed portraits as the sky turns gold and pink.
  • Decor: Both venues suit a natural, rustic aesthetic—think greenery garlands, simple florals, and lots of candlelight. Less is often more here; the buildings themselves do so much of the work.
  • Plan for All Weathers: The barns are wonderfully cosy in winter, and the gardens come alive in summer, but always have a Plan B for drinks receptions in case of rain. The team are fantastic at making last-minute adjustments to keep everything running smoothly.
  • Stay Nearby: Consider booking accommodation in Bath or the surrounding countryside so you can relax after the celebrations without a long drive home.
