A Beautifully Intimate Wedding at Cheslyn House & Gardens

A Quietly Emotional Wedding at Cheslyn House & Gardens

Some weddings are grand celebrations with hundreds of guests and packed dance floors. Others are quieter, more intimate affairs where every glance, every hug and every emotion feels amplified.

Lucy and James’ wedding at Cheslyn House & Gardens in Watford was very much the latter, heartfelt, emotional and beautifully personal.

As a Cheslyn House wedding photographer, these are often the weddings I find most moving to photograph. Smaller celebrations have a wonderful way of allowing people to simply be present. There is time for connection, time for tears and time to soak in the significance of the day without feeling rushed.

For Lucy and James, their May wedding brought exactly that feeling. A deeply emotional ceremony inside the beautiful house, tears from family and friends, quiet moments in the gardens and then a relaxed celebration afterwards at the Bedford Arms in Chenies.

Why choose me as your wedding photographer?

I focus on people and moments, capturing the love, life and laughter of your nearest and dearest in whats probably best described as a documentary style.

My approach is to tell your story through a mix of authentic candid images alongside some elegant couple portraits that whisk you back to your special day.

  • Beautiful photos for you to treasure
  • Magical moments, people focussed and emotive photography
  • Relaxed and easygoing approach to your day
  • Positive and fun to be around for you AND your guests

A ceremony filled with emotion

One of the things I loved most about Lucy and James’ wedding was how authentic everything felt.

The ceremony itself took place inside Cheslyn House, surrounded by their closest family and friends. There was laughter, plenty of emotion and several moments where emotions understandably got the better of everyone in the room.

As a documentary wedding photographer, these are the moments I naturally gravitate towards — the reassuring squeeze of a hand, parents quietly wiping away tears, shared smiles and those fleeting moments couples often miss in the whirlwind of the day.

My approach is always unobtrusive. Rather than directing every moment, I allow the story to unfold naturally, capturing things as they happen while stepping in gently when needed. You can see more of my recent work here, or if you want to find out a bit more about me, visit my About Me page.

I love the documentary style of the images because it feels like I am in the moment with my friends again. Every single person commented on Damion’s kindness and enthusiasm

Why Cheslyn House & Gardens Is Such a Hidden Gem Wedding Venue

Nestled away in Watford, Cheslyn House & Gardens feels wonderfully secluded and calm. For couples planning a smaller or more intimate wedding in Hertfordshire, it really is one of those hidden gems that deserves more attention.

What makes it particularly lovely for weddings is the balance between elegant interiors and beautiful outdoor spaces. The ceremony rooms inside the house feel warm and personal, whilst the gardens provide a peaceful setting for photographs without needing to travel elsewhere.

For Lucy and James, the house created a wonderfully intimate backdrop for their ceremony. It felt deeply personal from the outset, with emotions understandably running high as vows were exchanged. There were more than a few tears — not only from the couple, but from guests too.

These quieter ceremonies often produce some of the most meaningful photographs because nothing feels performative. The emotion simply unfolds naturally.

Wedding Photography in the Gardens at Cheslyn House

One of the biggest advantages of having a wedding at Cheslyn House & Gardens is exactly what the name suggests — the gardens themselves.

After the ceremony, we spent some time outside for a handful of relaxed family photographs. With intimate weddings, formal group photographs rarely need to dominate the schedule, which leaves far more time to actually enjoy the day.

In May, the gardens looked particularly beautiful. The softer spring light, fresh greenery and quieter pathways around the grounds made for a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

We kept portraits natural and unhurried, blending a few gently guided photographs with candid moments as Lucy and James simply enjoyed spending time together.

One of my favourite parts of the day was our relaxed stroll around the grounds for couple portraits. No awkward posing, no pressure — just time for them to take a breath together and reflect on the fact they had just got married.

Often, these quieter walks create the most meaningful images because couples can relax and simply focus on each other.

A Tip for Couples Planning a Wedding at Cheslyn House

If you are getting married at Cheslyn House & Gardens, I would always recommend allowing 20–30 minutes for portraits in the grounds, even if you are planning a smaller celebration.

The gardens are beautifully varied without being overwhelming, which means you can achieve a lovely mix of photographs in a relatively short amount of time. You do not need hours away from guests to create meaningful portraits.

If your wedding falls in spring or early summer, the softer light later in the afternoon is especially lovely for relaxed, natural photographs.

Planning an Intimate Wedding in Hertfordshire?

Lucy and James’ wedding was a lovely reminder that weddings do not need to be extravagant to feel deeply special.

There is something incredibly powerful about intimate celebrations — fewer distractions, more connection and space to really experience the day.

If you are considering Cheslyn House & Gardens as your wedding venue, my advice would be to embrace what makes it unique. Lean into the intimacy, allow time for the gardens and resist overfilling the schedule. The venue naturally lends itself to relaxed, meaningful celebrations.

And if emotional, natural and timeless photography matters to you, it is such a beautiful place to tell your story.
